How to Apply for an Immigrant Visa for Your Sibling ?

A sibling is a brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or adopted brother or sister. For the necessary sibling relationship to exist, each person must have been a child of at least one of the same parents. The siblings need not share the same biological parents as long as both became "children" at the appropriate time (before the time of 16 in cases of adoption, and before the age of 18 for stepchildren).

You cannot file a petition for your sibling at U.S. Embassy Caracas; you must file your petition in the United States through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

For information on how to file a petition for your sibling, please see the sibling visa page at United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The three-step process to become a legal immigrant is:

  • The Form I-130 must be filed and then approved in the US by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
  • The priority date of your sibling must be available.
  • Upon availability of the immigrant visa number for your sibling, he or she will be notified to go to the local US consulate to proceed as follows under. After the petition is approved, what's next?
